Evaluation: Judge Shamas received positive ratings from both attorneys and non-attorneys. Attorneys rated him highly for displaying familiarity with cases through prior preparation, ruling on motions or cases in a timely manner, displaying familiarity with cases through prior preparation, and for his attentiveness to the proceedings. Court staff rated him highly for discharging responsibilities diligently and for maintaining appropriate hours given the workload. The resource staff (e.g. law enforcement and probation officers) also rated the judge positively for discharging responsibilities diligently, as well as maintaining proper control over the proceedings. Judge Shamas has a positive attitude toward continuing to improve his performance and that of the judicial system.

Experience & Education: Judge Shamas was appointed to the bench in 2005 and elected in 2006. He hears both civil and criminal cases. Prior to his current judgeship, he worked in private practice for over 30 years. Judge Shamas serves as the chair of the Behavioral Health Commission of Chaves County. Judge Shamas was included in the "Best Lawyers in America." He received his undergraduate degree from the University of New Mexico and his law degree from the University of Iowa.
