Fernando R. Macias
District Court Judge
3rd Judicial District
Doña Ana County
Year: 2008
Evaluation: Judge Macias received positive scores from attorneys and resource staff (e.g. social workers and probation officers), but somewhat lower scores among the court staff. In particular, lawyers and resource staff give the judge positive ratings for his attentiveness to court proceedings, his ability to rule on motions and cases in a timely manner, maintaining proper control over the proceedings, and for having a dignified demeanor. All three groups rated the judge well for his promptness in scheduling hearings and trials. Based on the somewhat lower scores given to Judge Macias by court staff, he needs to improve his interpersonal relationship with this group. Judge Macias indicated a willingness to improve in this area.
Experience & Education: Judge Macias has served as a District Court Judge since September 2006 in the Children's Division. Prior to this, he served as the Executive Director for New Mexico Legal Aid, General Manager of the Border Environment Cooperation Commission, District Public Defender for Doña Ana County, and spent 13 years in private practice. He also served in the New Mexico State Senate for 16 years. Judge Macias received his undergraduate degree from NMSU and his law degree from Georgetown University.
