Evaluation: Judge Mathis is a competent judge. His specific strengths are in the areas of knowledge of the law and of the rules of procedure and evidence, promptness, and case preparation. Judge Mathis strives to improve his overall judicial performance. He has taken courses to enhance his legal knowledge and made numerous efforts to assist pro se litigants, providing them with weekly training sessions and instructional material packets, as well as establishing a network of attorneys to assist them. Since his prior evaluation, his ratings in areas relating to legal ability have improved.
Experience & Education: Judge Mathis has served as a District Judge since November 1992. He has been the President of the New Mexico District Judges' Association, Chief Judge of the Fourth Judicial District Court, Member of the New Mexico Board of Bar Commissioners and a New Mexico Hispanic Bar Honoree. Judge Mathis has been involved in his community as a Youth Basketball coach since 1991. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Stanford University and graduated from the University of New Mexico Law School.
