Evaluation: Judge Jonathan Sutin received very positive scores from all population groups surveyed. Attorneys rated him highly for his knowledge of the law, for rendering opinions without regard to possible public criticism, and for conducting himself in a manner free from impropriety. The court staff (attorneys and non-attorneys) rated him highly for being a hard worker, for participating in temporary reassignment of duties or staff to help other judges, and for discharging administrative responsibilities diligently. Judge Sutin's fellow judges rated him highly, giving him perfect scores for arriving at proceedings on time and participating in temporary reassignment of duties or staff to help other judges.
Experience & Education: Judge Sutin has served on the Court of Appeals since February 1999. He is presently the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. Prior to this, he worked with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, and 35 years in private practice as a trial and appellate lawyer. He has been an active member and has served as President of the H. Vearle Payne American Inn of Court. Judge Sutin also participates in the UNM School of Law's mock trials and oral arguments offering judicial guidance to law students. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado and law degree from the Univerity of New Mexico School of Law.
