SANTA FE – The New Mexico Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (NMJPEC) has appointed Clay Campbell of Albuquerque as a new member.
Campbell retired from the Second Judicial District Court in 2021 after serving as a civil judge for 16 years, where he handled about 1,500 cases a year. He was appointed to the Court in 2005.
As a judge, Campbell helped create the Judges' Science School sponsored by Los Alamos National Laboratory, worked on the Rules of Civil Procedure Committee to create fair rules for consumer debt cases and served on the Second Judicial District Pro Bono Committee, which created a pool of volunteer lawyers and conducted a number of free Law-La Palooza Legal Fairs.
Prior to becoming a judge, Campbell practiced civil law for 11 years and corporate law for four years. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1985 and earned his law degree from William & Mary Law School in 1990.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for me to help further the critical work of NMJPEC in improving the judiciary as a whole. I am grateful to be here," Campbell said.
NMJPEC was established by the Supreme Court of New Mexico in 1997 as a volunteer, nonpartisan commission to improve the performance of New Mexico’s judges and provide useful, credible information to voters on judges standing for retention in general elections. Under state law, judges standing for retention must receive 57 percent voter approval to remain on the bench.
The New Mexico Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission is comprised of 15 individuals – seven lawyers and eight non-lawyers – who are appointed by the Supreme Court to staggered terms. Members are selected from nominations made by the Governor, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Speaker of the House, Senate President Pro Tempore, House Minority Leader, Senate Minority Leader and President of the State Bar.
